Perfectly toasted buns and classic toppings like shredded cheddar, minced onion, and sliced jalapenos complete this delicious, quick, and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Chili Sauce

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon cumin

Hot Dogs

  • 8 hot dogs
  • 8 hot dog buns

Toppings

  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for topping)
  • Minced onion (for topping)
  • Sliced jalapeno (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chili dog sauce: Add the lean ground beef and beef broth to a deep skillet over medium heat. Use a fork to break the meat into very small pieces, pressing it down to create a finer texture than typical ground beef.
  2. Cook the chili sauce: Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and cumin to the skillet. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chili thickens slightly.
  3. Preheat the air fryer: Set your air fryer to 400°F (204°C) and preheat it for 2 minutes.
  4. Cook the hot dogs: Place the hot dogs in the air fryer basket and cook for 3 minutes. If you prefer browned hot dogs, continue cooking in additional 1-minute increments until desired doneness is achieved.
  5. Toast the buns: Place each cooked hot dog into a bun, then return them to the air fryer basket. Turn off the air fryer and let the hot dogs and buns sit inside for 1 minute to lightly toast the buns.
  6. Assemble and serve: Spoon the warm chili sauce generously over each hot dog. Top with shredded cheddar cheese, minced onion, and sliced jalapeno as desired. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • For a spicier chili, add cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the chili while cooking.
  • Choose lean ground beef to reduce fat content in the chili sauce.
  • Adjust cooking time of hot dogs to suit your preferred level of browning.
  • If you don’t have an air fryer, hot dogs can be cooked on a grill or stovetop and buns toasted in a conventional oven under a broiler for 1-2 minutes.
  • Leftover chili sauce can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and used as a topping for other dishes.
