Dough
- 3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- ¾ cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
- ¼ cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 1 large egg
- ½ tsp salt
Filling
- ⅓ cup brown sugar (packed)
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
Cream Cheese Frosting
- 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
- ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 1–2 tbsp milk (to adjust texture)
- Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, stir together warm milk, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Let the mixture rest for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating that the yeast is active.
- Make the Dough: Add melted butter, egg, salt, and the all-purpose flour to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead by hand or with a stand mixer for 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Prepare the Filling: In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Set aside the softened butter separately for spreading.
- Roll and Fill the Dough: Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a 14×9 inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter evenly over the entire surface, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture generously on top.
- Shape the Rolls: Carefully roll the dough tightly from one long side to the other, forming a log. Slice the log into 10–12 even rolls and arrange them in a greased baking dish with some spacing to allow for expansion.
- Second Rise: Cover the baking dish with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let the rolls rise again for 30–40 minutes until they become puffy.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown on top.
- Make the Frosting: While the rolls bake, beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually mix in powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and 1–2 tablespoons of milk to achieve a creamy, spreadable frosting.
- Frost and Serve: Spread the cream cheese frosting over the warm cinnamon rolls as soon as they come out of the oven. Serve immediately to enjoy them soft and gooey.
Notes
- Make sure the milk is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
- Kneading the dough properly helps develop gluten for soft, fluffy rolls.
- You can prepare the rolls the night before and refrigerate after the second rise, baking fresh in the morning.
- Adjust the frosting thickness with milk to your preference.
- For extra flavor, sprinkle chopped nuts or raisins in the filling if desired.
