Dough
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm milk
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- ½ tsp salt
- Blue food coloring (gel recommended)
Cinnamon Filling
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup softened butter
Blue Frosting
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Blue food coloring (gel recommended)
Topping
- Crushed chocolate chip cookies
- Mini chocolate chips
- Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm milk, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Allow the mixture to sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is activated.
- Prepare the dough: Add melted butter, beaten egg, salt, and blue food coloring to the yeast mixture. Gradually incorporate the all-purpose flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Roll the dough: Punch down the dough, then roll it out into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick.
- Add filling: Spread the softened butter evenly over the rolled dough. Sprinkle the brown sugar and ground cinnamon mixture evenly on top.
- Roll and cut: Roll the dough tightly from one end to the other to form a log. Cut the log into 9–12 equal rolls.
- Second rise: Place the cut rolls into a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise for 30 minutes until puffed.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
- Prepare frosting: Beat together softened cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and blue food coloring until smooth and creamy.
- Decorate: Spread the blue frosting over the warm cinnamon rolls. Sprinkle the crushed chocolate chip cookies and mini chocolate chips on top for decoration and added texture.
Notes
- Use gel food coloring for a brighter and more vibrant blue color without adding too much liquid.
- Ensure the milk is warm, not hot, to prevent killing the yeast.
- Allow rolls to cool slightly before frosting to avoid the frosting melting too much.
- For an authentic Cookie Monster look, generously add crushed chocolate chip cookies as topping.
