Ingredients
- 1 box chocolate cake mix
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
- 2 large eggs (for cake mix preparation)
- 1/3 cup water (for cake mix preparation)
- Prepare the Batter: In a medium bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix with the eggs, water, and melted butter. Stir until smooth to create the cake batter.
- Bake the Bottom Layer: Pour approximately half of the prepared cake batter into a greased 9×9 inch baking pan, spreading it evenly. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set but the center is still slightly soft.
- Add Caramel and Chocolate Chips: Remove the pan from the oven and evenly spread the caramel sauce over the partially baked cake layer. Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly on top of the caramel layer.
- Top with Remaining Batter: Carefully spoon the remaining half of the cake batter over the caramel and chocolate chip layer, spreading it gently to cover as much of the filling as possible.
- Bake Until Done: Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the top layer comes out mostly clean. The bars should be firm and set.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares. This helps the layers set for clean slices and an enjoyable texture.
Notes
- Use room temperature eggs and melted butter for best batter consistency.
- Make sure not to overbake the bottom layer before adding caramel to keep it soft enough to meld layers together.
- You can substitute caramel sauce with dulce de leche for a richer flavor variation.
- For a more intense chocolate flavor, use semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips.
- Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
